"
Pearl - The Story of Janis Joplin "
Written by Brian Langtry and Len
Holden.
This
two-act musical play, set in the heart of the `hippy` and `post
hippy` period 1968-70,
focuses upon the life and character of the most original female
interpreter of the blues since the era of Bessie Smith.
`Pearl`
examines the complex and charismatic singer`s needs, relationships, desires
and fears as her story leads us through this culturally revolutionary
era from her appearance at The Monterey pop Festival to the recording
of her final, seminal album `Pearl`. Janis Joplin uniquely characterised
the freewheeling spirit of the age and an existence only ever
located in the `now`. Throughout her short life she was plagued
by insecurity, drug and alcohol dependence and an inability to
reconcile the reality and fantasy of rock stardom. Yet she was
also capable of moments of considered reflection, of intimacy
and of startling poignancy. The work encompasses not only the
unforgettable music of Janis Joplin but also that of a ranfe of
60`s superstars including Joan Baez, Simon and Garfunkel, Kris
Kristofferson, Canned Heat and the Mamas and the Papas. Impotantly
though this is not a tribute show but a bona fide dramatic life
story.
Running
Time: 1 hour 50 minutes. Use of filmic sequences. Cast of 9 actor/musicians.
A
new movie of Janis Joplin`s life opens in 2007!

"
Tallulah " Written and devised
by Brian Langtry
A
two-act play focusing upon the character and life of the infamous
Southern belle who charmed London and Broadway theatre goers from
the 1920`s through to her virtual retirement in the 1950`s.
Outrageously
craving of attention and defiant of all accepted conventions the
openly bisexual Tallulah found herself drawn to the intellectual
bohemians of her era bcoming the devotee of both " The Algonquin
Set " in New York and the " Bright Young Things "
in London. She was revered by her coterie of London " Gallery
Girls " who took great delight in defying every known theatre
convention, casting aside inhibitions and stamping, cooing and
wailing at their heroine`s every movement. A uniquely stylised
actress Tallulah would these days inevitably have become tagged
with the mantle of `celebrity`.
The
play provides a frank and sexually revealing insight into the
character, relationships, psyche and idiosyncrasies of this complex
woman and the world and period which she inhabited. Visually engaging
costuming, sets and styling covering the 1928 to 1954 period.
Running
Time: 1 hour 45 minutes. Minimum cast of 2men and 2 women- 9 characters
doubling or expanded cast for individual roles. Use of filmic
sequences and a simulated staging of "The Big Show"
Tallulah`s hit U.S. radio show of the 1950s which involves musical
content. |

"
A Girl called Dusty " Written
by Brian Langtry
The
story of the `white queen of soul` from her early successes with
brother Dion in The Springfields through to her later revival
via 1990`s electro pop.
In
between the highs of becoming the biggest selling female solo
artist of the time, the critical acclaim of the album ` Dusty
in Memphis ` and the re-emergent collaboration with the Pet Shop
Boys, Dusty plummeted troughs of deep despair, desperate times
of promiscuity, drink and drug dependency, financial chaos, unresolved
psychological traumas, insecurities of sexual identity and a seemingly
unending inability to find the kind of loving relationship which
she so desperately desired. She was strong yet vulnerable, loving
yet demanding, confident yet insecure. She was the undisputed
incarnation of sixties pop.
A
musical biog which enshrines, in addition to 18 iconic Dusty songs,
a variety of music and settings from the era in which the world
changed for ever - The Swinging Blue Jeans, Ready Steady Go, Marthe
Reeves and the Vandellas. Buddy Rich, The Pet Shop Boys. Changing
times make for lavish costuming, dance and set design.
Running
Time: 1 hour 50 minutes. Cast 9 actor musicians. Filmic sequences.
A
movie is due out in 2007!

"
The Five Year Itch " Written
by Steve Black
The
Five Year Itch focuses upon two brief but seminal moments in Marilyn
Monroe`s life which are seperated by an intervening five year
period. The play juxtaposes historic fact with real time events,
actions and consequences; Steve Black`s intimate script draws
us unerringly into the emotional milieu of the present as the
story of a chance motel room meeting develops over the intervening
five year period into a relationship of lasting significance.
Initially
we find Marilyn exhausted and reflective fleeing from chaotic
stardom to a quiet motel room where she seeks to make sense of
the crazed carousel upon which she finds herself. The opportunity
of absolution is provided by a chance meeting with a stranger
which, in the ensuing discourse, allows Marilyn to consider and
confront all those near and past traumas which linger corrosively
in the roots of her troubled world.
Half
a decade later she is summoned to the same motel to meet with
the man who, in those intervening years, has become one of her
lovers. Momentous political change is about to be unleashed and
events that follow will forever lie at the heart of the myths,
realities and assertions of one of the most enigmatic and iconic
stories that the movie industry has ever experienced.
An
engaging and fascinating insight into the life of the icon that
was Marilyn Monroe.
